| Short bio | I have one thing (only) in common with Prince William; I am a Geography graduate from St. Andrews University (1983). After a couple of years working in France and Sudan, I started my career in market research in 1985 when I joined the British Market Research Bureau; based in Ealing, West London. The very first healthcare study I was involved in was to measure the impact of an AIDS advertising campaign in 1986 by interviewing night-club goers regarding their sexual orientation and behaviour. The study was led by John Samuels, the then Managing Director, who was a great influence in my early days of market research. I also shared offices with Andy Brown and Sue Brooker, who now seem to be running the agency. Whilst at BMRB, I worked in both the ad hoc and TGI divisions - latterly to develop & market their new PC analysis system called Choices. My first client was Saatchi & Saatchi & the rather daunting Peter Settrington. Around that time, I added MRS Dip to my name. During the late 1980s I was also involved in the Alterative Research Group (ARG), a sub-committee of the Market Research Society (MRS) – and was ARG Chairman in 1990. To celebrate Market Research week, we memorably organised a “Blind Date” evening in 1989 at Isis’s offices in Putney (where I first met Colin Maitland) and an “Opportunity Knocks” evening the following year when, against our better judgment, 4 of us performed a balloon dance to “Zorba the Greek” in front of 200 of our peers. A special thanks to Kate Dann (now of KD Consulting) who was such a strong supporter of the ARG in those days. In 1989 I joined British Airways and worked for them for a couple of years, and, after a short stint at Johnson’s Wax, I started my pharmaceutical research career with Isis Research in 1992. This was followed by joining P\S\L Research in 2000, and then starting Brand Health International in 2005. During 2002 I helped co-ordinate a survey of Amberley residents; an English village I lived in at that time. The survey was designed to assist a Long Term Plan for the village and I am currently on Amberley Parish Council to help implement the plan. I now realize how long it takes to arrange for a bus shelter to be built! Local residents, such as James Tolson and David Lyon, make such a strong contribution to the dynamism of Amberley. My interests include cycle touring, maps and evaluating new ideas. At university I was President of the Geography Society and I keep up my interest in the subject by attending lectures at the Royal Geographical Society. Indeed, one of my dreams is to be a sufficient expert on something to give a paper there! |
