Italy is formed by a boot shaped peninsula and the two largest islands in
the Mediterranean. It holds 2 independent states, one claiming sanctity (San
Marino) and the other holiness (Vatican city). However Italy’s claim to fame
is firstly due to food. Religion tends to come well after fashion, cars, football,
history and probably a few other things not least it’s ‘amusing’ prime minister.
System Type/Funding: The national healthcare service in Italy is tax founded and administered through local health authorities. The unique feature of the Italian system is that it pays GPs a fee per patient per year, thus not taking into account repeat visits. Patients are able to access secondary care without referrals and can choose to pay for the service to reduce waiting time.
